Halfway through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance’s 5.0 program to keep the world's children safe from vaccine-preventable diseases, advocates realized that many of the countries Gavi supported were falling behind on payments—from co-financing to the everyday costs of running immunization programs.
That's when Gavi chose us, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), to design a locally-led program that could rally 10 countries to meet the challenge.
With world-class technical support and capacity strengthening, GHAI brought local civil society, governments, parliamentarians, opinion leaders and the media around a single priority: financing immunization at home.
The result? A real shift in mindset. Local ownership is now a priority for key government and non-governmental stakeholders. What was once mostly discussed behind closed doors is now part of a much broader conversation, including within communities themselves.
Immunization prevents an estimated 3.5 to 5 million deaths every year—it's one of the smartest investments any country can make.
